The jungle is unnaturally quiet, the windows on the 86th Floor are dark, the ancient city of Opar is populated only by hollow echos. The Lord of the Jungle and the Man of Bronze have vanished.

The Keeper of their Flame is gone, and we are the poorer for it.

Philip Jose' Farmer, award-winning sf writer who wrote crossover fiction professionally, died this morning in his home in Peoria, Illinois. He was 91.

A while back I posted an essay regarding the canonical and EU crossovers with Buffy and Angel (and Fray, though most people seem to forget that last one). This is the sequel to that, detailing the crossovers that occured with the crossed media. Essentially, 2 steps away from Buffy.

The fact that I got over 150 different entities ranging from Law and Order: Special Victim's Unit to The Chronicles of Narnia.

Enjoy the Madness.

I doubt I will take it to the Tertiary stage, espeicially if it expands as much as it did this time!

It this is not allowed by the mods, then please deleete.

I like approaching crossovers from a theoretical perspective. That is, I rarely write stories on a crossover these days, but instead write theoretical essays on how such things would flow and the mechanics behind it all. With a special focus on subtle (and overt) crossover that occur within the published media of a specific franchize.

Odd? Very.

Recently, I finally compiled an up-to-date Crossover essay regarding the 20 Canonical and EU crossovers that have occured within Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. With discussions upon how that effects both the crossed media and the core of the Buffyverse.

I'll save how Secondary and Tertiary crossovers can aid in the construction of a world and how such work can expand ones understanding of said universe for another essay.

Enjoy!

Announcing the second annual [livejournal.com profile] tthdrabbles Mod Birthday Fic Fest!

The rules are simple. Write as many 100- or 200-word drabbles for the challenges in that community as you can, between now and my birthday. That's March 10th, six weeks away. (You may cross-post elsewhere). For every author who writes six or more drabbles-- that's only one a week!-- I will write a minimum of 1,000 words of fiction in one or more of my fandoms, crossover or not, centered on any character you choose.

Additionally, for every drabble you write over the six-drabble limit, I will add 100 words to that minimum value. Which means if you were crazy enough to write fifty, like [livejournal.com profile] az_anneliese did last year, I'd have to give you at least 5,400 words of fic.

A requirement of [livejournal.com profile] tthdrabbles is that all stories be a crossover with Buffy: the Vampire Slayer or Angel: the Series. However, the other fandom(s) crossed over are completely up to the author, and that requirement is not imposed on the stories you win from me.

Get writing, and then make me write for you! *grin*

Long has this plot piqued my interest, but the logistics of it frustrate many attempts at it. Part of it is narrowing the characters down.

Hi!

We are a group of readers and writers who love to read fan fiction on the net.  We are interested in finding out what makes the writers tick!  To this end we created a community where every fan fiction writer can write freely about their fandom and tell the world about where this urge to do so comes from.
So it's not another site  where you can post your fiction; it's a site where you write about yourself and your love for writing fan fiction. We ask for a one-time entry about your motives for writing so that we can collect a great variety of entries about  infatuation, writing-urges and admiration for many, many fandoms.

The community can be found here:[profile] fanwriting
Check it out and write something about yourself for a change!

My apologies for cross-posting this all over the place, but I thought you might like to be in on this:

I have created a community called [livejournal.com profile] rabbit_hole_day. Last year, there was an idea that I saw on LJ that piqued my curiosity:

January 27th is the birthday of Lewis Carrol, author of ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND. Alice fell down a rabbit hole into a place where everything had changed and none of the rules could be counted on to apply anymore.

I say, let's do the same: January 27th, 2005 should be the First Annual LiveJournal Rabbit Hole Day. When you post on that Thursday, instead of the normal daily life and work and news and politics, write about the strange new world you have found yourself in for the day, with its strange new life and work and news and politics.

Are your pets talking back at you now? Has your child suddenly grown to full adulthood? Does everyone at work think you're someone else now? Did Bush step down from the White House to become a pro-circuit tap-dancer? Did Zoroastrian missionaries show up on your doorstep with literature in 3-D? Have you been placed under house arrest by bizarre insectoid women wielding clubs made of lunchmeat?

Let's have a day where nobody's life makes sense anymore, where any random LJ you click on will bring you some strange new tale. Let's all fall down the Rabbit Hole for 24 hours and see what's there. It will be beautiful.

This year, I have created a community for this project called [livejournal.com profile] rabbit_hole_day. Basically, there are two options for this project:

1) You can do all your entries in one day, or
2) You can do them over the entire three day weekend (Jan 27-29)

For the record, I'll be doing the second option, as I am going to use this for an idea for a project in the [livejournal.com profile] febnowrimo community. I expect most of you will just do the first one, though.

See you on January 27th!

Posting this again, mostly because I want to make sure everyone sees this on their f-list and I like to be a PITA.

Is anyone out there even remotely interested in doing crossovers based on Lost and/or the concepts/themes of Lost?

Read the previous post and then take the poll.

I want to at least make sure that there's a mild amount of interest in this before beginning to plot the community(ies). There is the possibility of two comms, one for RP and one as an open writing 'verse, but I'm still looking to see if there is actual interest.

Thanks!

I often get odd ideas when I am falling asleep at night. This should come as no surprise to you creative types, because the weird ideas often show up when our minds are most relaxed, correct?

The latest crack!writing idea: )

Anyway, I'll make this simple. (Follow the fake cut to the poll at my LJ)

Comment please with any other thoughts you might have.

I have a question for further discussion of all community members. When considering the requirements and description of this group, how are we defining crossovers? Should crossovers be considered only across different fandoms (for example Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Star Trek), or even similiar/shared/spin-off fandoms (Buffy and Angel, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis)

. . .

I realize that this is a fine line to walk, because while there might be argument for why Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel is not a crossover, there could be argument for why something such as Star Trek: TNG and Star Trek: Voyager or Stargate SG-1/Stargate: Atlantis can be considered crossovers.

So, I'm leaving this for community discussion. Be nice, be polite, and keep it civil.

Folks here may be interested in my newly updated musings about crossovers, in which I talk about what makes up a crossover; I've just added a bit about things to avoid...

Weird idea I had after some discussion of the "Xander's 'Evil' Twin" episode of Buffy, which might be applicable to other fandoms.

There's an idea called Twin Towns, which began in Europe after WW2, in which two cities of roughly the same size and similar interests (e.g. industrial towns, mining towns, etc.) are "twinned" with each other. Typically they are in different countries, and the general aim is to promote peace, education, etc. For example, Cambridge (UK) is twinned with Heidelberg in Germany and Szeged, Hungary. The web page below explains the origins of the idea. Usually twin towns exchange cultural stuff (museum exhibits, sponsor orchestra visits, school trips, etc.), offer opportunities for natives of the other town to visit for educational reasons, host members of the local government while they study common problems (traffic, crime, pollution, public transport, etc.), and so forth.

This idea has spread beyond Europe, and some cities in the USA etc. are also twinned. For example Passau, in Germany, is twinned with Hackensack, New Jersey.

All of which leads me to the idea that Sunnydale might be some innocent city's evil twin - or have an evil twin that is even worse in some way. And of course this could apply to other fictional towns such as Smallville, Seacouver (or is that a real place?), Metropolis, etc.

I'm sure that there are plenty of ways to use this idea in fanfic, especially in a crossover. I'd particularly like to see something based on a BtVS crossover, but I'd also be interested in seeing the idea used for other genres and crossovers.

http://www.fact-index.com/t/tw/twin_towns.html is a web site explaining the idea.

There are lots of other web sites mentioning twin towns and giving examples.

Just noticed this community and am now very excited.
I've been a huge fans of xovers ever since way back in the early days of X-Files fanfic. In fact the first thing I wrote was god-awful X-Files xovers. I shudder at the memory of them...not good.

Anywho right now I am beginning work on a massive one. and have another massive one on the back burner.

Right now it looks to be an X2 and Farscape crossover.

I've also got the nigglings of a Firefly crossover.
Who knows. Cannot wait to see and hear more!

PS. Anyone know of a really good Whedon archive? Something like X-Files' Gossamer group?
[identity profile] weirdweb.livejournal.com
...and I've been trying to compile a list of Most Overdone Crossover Cliches ever. (And maybe accompanying thoughts on how to turn them around.) So here's what I've got off the top of my head so far:

Generic:

  • Everyone finds out about everyone else's Really Cool Secret.

  • You think a character from Show A would be perfect with (or it would be so wrong you want to try it) a character from Show B, and mash the universes together and screw with existing canons simply so they can hook up.

  • You insert a Sue/Stu into one universe and use them as the catalyst to unite the two shows.

Show Specific:

  • Buffy/HP - (insert Scooby here) is invited to teach at Hogwarts.

  • Buffy/HP - (insert Scooby here, but usually Willow) is sent to study at Hogwarts.

  • Buffy/any show: Character from Show B becomes a Potential/Slayer. (HAS been done properly, but post-"Chosen" it happens so often I want to beat my head against a wall.) Even worse if said character ALREADY has super powers of some sort, so being a Slayer on top of that is usually overkill.

  • Highlander/Buffy: Buffy becomes Immortal. (See above. She's already a Slayer. It's overkill.)

  • Highlander/any show: Main character from Show B, despite all evidence to the contrary, is an Immortal and just never told anyone. (This is worse than a character finding out that he/she is Immortal, frankly.)

  • Lord of the Rings/any show: Character B is sent to Middle-earth and becomes part of the Fellowship. (This is part of the reason I'm liking Lisette's "Equinoxium," aside from the research and careful thought she's put into it, it's set a few years AFTER the War of the Ring.)

Anyone have more to add? In fanfic genres that I'm not as familiar with?
[identity profile] fikgirl.livejournal.com
I posted this in my LJ, but I thought I would share the rant here, just to get the ball rolling.

This was supposed to be an essay on keeping canon characters in crossovers from becoming Mary Sues, and instead it blossomed into a total essay on writing successful crossovers. (My opinion only, folks. Have your own and fire away.)

Because I'm nice, I'm hiding this one behind the cut tag )

I'm sure there are more, but I'm not thinking of them right now.
