[identity profile] fikgirl.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] crossoverfic
I have a question for further discussion of all community members. When considering the requirements and description of this group, how are we defining crossovers? Should crossovers be considered only across different fandoms (for example Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Star Trek), or even similiar/shared/spin-off fandoms (Buffy and Angel, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis)

. . .

I realize that this is a fine line to walk, because while there might be argument for why Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel is not a crossover, there could be argument for why something such as Star Trek: TNG and Star Trek: Voyager or Stargate SG-1/Stargate: Atlantis can be considered crossovers.

So, I'm leaving this for community discussion. Be nice, be polite, and keep it civil.

One good way to think about it is to ask yourself if a single-fandom site would regard the story as a crossover with an external series.

In this context most Buffy sites seem to feel that the Buffyverse (BtVS and Angel) is one universe. Most Trek sites seem to regard Star Trek Voyager / DS9 / Next Gen as one canon - I'm open to argument about Enterprise and original Trek. I'd generally consider Atlantis to be part of the same universe as SG-1, and Gateworld (the big Stargate site) would appear to agree.

While I do tend to want to argue that, since SG-1 and 'Lantis are in two completely different sections of the universe... Buffy and Angel are also in two completely different cities in California.

I suppose I then come down on the side of, "if it's a seperate book/movie/show, even it's a spin-off, it's a crossover".

...which begs the question, old Galactica/new Galactica? Are there crossovers out there yet?

Crossovers

I know this is fairly general and simple, but I've only considered storylines and the interaction of characters that networks, studios, or publishing company's are unable to accomplish on their own without a lawsuit or several months of negotiations to be true crossovers. Captain Kirk meets Captain Sisko, and Angel kissing Buffy wouldn't be considered a crossover for me in my humble opinion, but if Captain Kirk and Luke Skywalker started playing miniature golf together, that would most certainly be considered a crossover. Crossovers to me are rare and are supposed to be treasured because they aren't something we should ever get to see, and it's usually a privalidge when we have the opportunity. We're never supposed to see the TARDIS materialize on the saucer section of a Constitution Class starship, and we're never supposed to see Predator go after Riddick because ultimately these are different universes we're talking about.

Anyway, that's my contribution. I like the LJ, keep up the good work gents.

You make a good point, but the reality is that crossovers do happen in mainstream fiction. While it's true that Law & Order and Law & Order: Criminal Intent are both produced by the same production company and air on the same network, for practical purposes of story, they're separate "worlds" most of the time. A crossover between those shows is more likely (because it's easier) than one between unrelated shows...but it's still a crossover.

Is it likely to be as imagination-stretching as Dr. Who visiting the Enterprise or Buffy fighting side-by-side with Anita Blake? Probably not. But it's still a crossover.

I can see your point.

If they are the same movie/show

If they are the same movie show and take place in rougly the same "verse" I don't consider it a crossover.
