01)Pre-series

She could no longer look at her own reflection. When she did dare to look up at the broken girl she had become it only brought more tears. She didn’t want to be alive, she didn’t want anything but to simply be gone, and never heard from again.

Veronica got up, pushing her long, golden locks out of her eyes, and walked into the bathroom. She threw off the torn, white dress she had worn to the party the night before. Pushing open the shower curtain, she climbed in. She didn’t turn the water on yet, just stood there looking at the clean, white tiles on the walls.

Clean. That’s what she had been before, before she had the clean ripped away, by someone she did not know and never hoped to find out.

Now she turned the water on and let it rain steaming hot on her body.

.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.

When her hair was as dry as the tears she’d forced away, Veronica went down for breakfast, exchanging pleasantries with her father and headed outside to eat her cereal. She ignored his plea for her to stay in because it was raining, she wanted to be out in the rain, that way no one would notice if she cried.

But someone did notice. Someone across the street set down their coffee on the bench they sat on and got up, walking across the road. Someone stopped in front of her, and when Veronica looked up she saw her own face staring back at her.

The face was a few years older, but not many, and there were no tears but it was definitely her face. She gasped as the girl sat down on her front porch with her.

There were no words for a long time and they just stared out at the rain together. Finally Veronica looked over to the girl who shared her face and asked “Who are you?”

The girl didn’t look at her as she spoke. “I was supposed to come get you, I was supposed to bring you back to the Company.” That didn’t answer Veronica’s question at all. “But I don’t think I will. You might pose a problem, looking like that and being all weepy. Besides, you kinda creep me out, and if you really were anything special you probably wouldn‘t sobbing like a little girl.”

“What company? What are you talking about?” Veronica asked, confusion was something she was used to by now, but this was even harder to follow than the rest of her screwed up life. She ignored the other girls insults, by now things like that were hardly unnerving.

“You shouldn’t cry, you know, it shows weakness. Though, I guess you are fairly weak.” The girl said it like she was so much better than Veronica.

“Maybe I am.” She countered.

“Maybe you are.”

Veronica thought maybe if she told this bitch that looked like her what her name was, the girl would tell her who she was.

“I’m Veronica.” She said.

“I’m not.” The girl simply said. There was a long pause and then she spoke again. “Maybe you are weak, but you don’t have to be. Whatever it is that’s got your little world turned upside down is nothing compared to real life, get over it.” Not Veronica didn’t know how wrong she was, but it still wasn’t bad advice.

Not Veronica stood up and started to make her way down the side walk and called over her shoulder “You have really pretty hair.” Veronica just stared as the girl stopped and turned all the way around to face her. “You should cut it off.” She winked and lifted her hand up, pointing her fingers at Veronica. She watched as blue sparks shot from the girl’s hand, hitting her and giving her a painful little jolt.

Veronica pondered whether or not that had actually happened. In the end she decided that the girl was real but the electricity she had felt had been some kind of illusion. So she just sat there deciding whether or not to take the girl’s advice. When she did decide to take it, she took all of it and her father just gasped as she ran back into the house and pulled out a pair of scissors, chopping off all the pretty hair.

02) Post-Pilot

She was getting on with her life now. Veronica had left the broken girl behind and turned into a stronger version. A version that didn’t break, or cry, one that didn’t appear to need anyone.

But she did. She still needed her father, and now she had a new friend. A real, actual friend. Not Lilly, no, but Wallace seemed very nice and having someone besides her father and her dog sounded appealing.

She was also feeling particularly gleeful this morning because of the bloody nose Logan Echolls earned himself yesterday. That’d show him to go anywhere near her LeBaron. For once she was actually quite thankful for the existence of biker gangs, and their leaders.

This time Veronica wasn’t making a spectacle of herself. She was just going along, getting out of her car and walking up to the school when that girl approached her. She just walked right up to her, stopping only when she was staring right at her.

Veronica looked through her bag and pretended not to notice the presence of Not Veronica, or so she called the girl whose face mirrored hers. It had been almost a year since she had last seen this girl, but here she was, tapping her foot impatiently in front of her.

She finally looked up and tilted her head to the side. “Sorry, I didn’t see you there.” She smirked at the blonde in front of her.

“Mmm-hmm.” The girl’s smirk mirrored her own.

“So, you again, whatever your name is, are you just stopping by to say ‘hi’ or are you giving away free hairstyling advice again?”

“Advice that it looks like you took. The short hair is cute, it’s fit’s the whole new, badass, sarcastic Veronica. That was your name, right?” The girl pretended to ponder this as Veronica wondered how long it was possible to have a battle of wits with yourself.

“It was, and still is. And you didn’t answer my question, what do you want?” Veronica told Not Veronica.

“Believe it or not, I’m actually just stopping by to say ‘hi’. Last time I was sent after you, I’ll admit, but this time I saw you from my car and thought I’d see how you were, Veronica.” She paused. “You know what I’m going to call you Ronnie, can I?”

“No.”

“Tough. So Ronnie, how’s life treating you?”

Veronica just glared. “Fantastic, and you Dana?”

The girl gave her an exasperated grin. “Wow, you really are stupider than you look. My name’s not Dana, genius.”

“Aww, and I thought you liked my hair.” Veronica feigned hurt. “And since you refuse to tell me your name I’ve decided to call you Dana.”

The girl rolled her eyes. “Fine, fine, if you’re that desperate to know, I’m Elle.”

“Just Elle?” Veronica asked.

“Just Veronica?” Elle asked.

Despite the bitchiness Veronica kind of actually liked this girl, she was like her. She could see past the surface to see Elle was a lot more broken than she looked. Broken just like her.

“So Elle,” This time Veronica’s voice lost the sarcastic edge and turned to just plain curious and a little concerned. “Ever been struck by lightning.” After her last encounter with this girl she had read up on all the ways people could produce electricity. One of the ways was to conduct it through lightning.

Elle smirked, realizing Veronica hadn’t mentally blocked out the end of their last meeting. “More times than you’d think.”

“How did you do that? Make electricity come out of your hand, I mean, it’s not natural.”

“No, it’s really not. I’m not natural, I’m a freak. I don’t know how it works and I don’t know how I do it but I just do, okay?” She looked like she genuinely wanted Veronica to drop the subject. Veronica opted for the sarcastic approach anyway, that was safer.

“As far as explanations go that was kind of lame.” She said. Elle seemed to be over her defensiveness and smiled, not smirked, actually smiled back at her.

“I suppose it was, I guess I’m just…” She trailed off looking at something behind Veronica. “Hmm, cute boy.” she said simply.

Veronica turned around to see Logan Echolls staring at the two of them. He seemed to have noticed that they looked exactly the same, and was staring. Veronica just rolled her eyes.

“He’s a jackass.”

Elle scoffed. “He’s a high school boy, of course he’s a jackass. But he‘s a cute jackass.” This made Veronica smile and she actually felt comfortable with Elle. The other her, but she wasn’t really. Elle was just different enough from her for Veronica to like her. She knew Elle didn’t have all the answers so she decided not to ask why they looked so alike. She supposed it was for the same reason the other girl could shoot lightning out of her hands.

“Well it was nice catching up Veronica. I’ll probably never see you again, so goodbye my dear umm-…I’m not going to say friend, but maybe clone. Or I suppose we could be long lost sisters or something but that would be too soap opera like.”

Veronica smiled. “Whatever’s good.”

“Goodbye girl who has my face.” Elle said.

“Goodbye girl who has mine.” Veronica said.

Elle picked up a strand of Veronica’s hair. “It really does look nice.” Then she sent a little jolt of lightning straight through the strand. It was so small Veronica wouldn’t have seen it if she hadn’t felt it. Elle turned and walked to a nice looking car and got in, driving away.

Veronica turned towards the school and walked past Logan, not even glancing at him. He followed her anyway.

“Veronica Mars, have you got a much hotter long lost sister that you forgot to tell me about?” He smirked at her. Veronica continued walking, still not looking up.

“How’s your face, Logan?” This shut him up.

03) Post-Season One

He was smiling at her and she was smiling back, just glad to be alone with him. Logan hadn’t been to her apartment more than a few times because her dad was always there, but he was still in the hospital so they had the place to themselves. Neither of them liked spending time at Logan’s house, because of the place reeked of Aaron. Although Logan had long since tossed all the reminders of his not-so-doting father, the place still had an underlying creepiness that you couldn’t shake.

They had spent most of the after-noon making out and were now having a quick lunch of French fries and burgers. Veronica was just about to ask him if he wanted to take a walk on the beach when there was a soft tapping on the front door.

“Oh,” she said. “That’s probably Mac, I asked her if she could try and fix me computer and she said she’d drop it off today. I’ll be just a second.”

“Don’t be too long, I might get lonely.” Logan smiled at her.

She just rolled her eyes, turning the knob and pulling the door open to reveal someone who definitely was not Mac. Someone, who at first glance might have been called Veronica. But Veronica, being Veronica, knew that she was her, and the other girl that looked just like her was called Elle.

She didn’t really no what to say, the last time she had seen Not Veronica was at school a few months ago and Elle had said they were never going to meet again. Veronica didn’t mind that, although she rather liked Elle but it was just too creepy talking to her own face. She had assumed if they ever had met again it would be by chance and not Elle showing up at her door. Unless she was at the wrong party address, and she didn’t really seem like the party type, Veronica was fairly sure she was here for her.

She stood there for a while, Elle just staring back, until she remembered Logan was there, and she knew this would not end well if he were to see her face attached to a different person, so she said “Wrong house.”

Elle snorted. “Unless there are three of us, this is the right house. I came here looking for Veronica Mars and you are definitely her. I wouldn’t forget your face, trust me.” She pushed past Veronica inviting herself in and scanning the small apartment, like she was grading it.

“Come in, why don’t you.” Veronica said sarcastically as Elle looked around her living room. She thought maybe if she pretended Logan wasn’t there Elle wouldn’t notice him, and at the moment she was too busy looking through the Mars DVD collection. But Logan certainly noticed Elle.

“What the hell?” Elle spun around as soon as the words were out of his mouth. Veronica turned more slowly waiting for the inevitable. She honestly didn’t want anyone to know that Elle existed, it was all just too weird, and with her life that’s saying something.

“But,” he continued. “But…Oh my god, there really are two of you. I thought I was high or something that morning but, oh god, it was real.” He turned to Veronica. “Who is she?”

“Umm…” Before Veronica could finish, or even start for that matter, Elle interrupted.

“Oh look, it’s your jackass. " She had a genuine smile as she sid this. "What’s he doing at your house? Aren’t jackasses supposed to be kept outdoors or something? I’m sure there’s a rule like that somewhere?”

“I’m a what?" He glared at Elle.

“Jackass.” She supplied merrily.

“Yeah, okay sometimes, but is that any reason to not let me inside.”

“Well I guess, but-”

Veronica cut Elle off. “You do realize your conversation topic is basically the lamest thing, ever.”

“It really is.” Logan agreed.

“Aw, your jackass is agreeing with you, how sweet?” Elle cocked her head to the side and smiled childishly.

“Veronica, would you mind telling me who your evil twin is?” Logan turned to his girlfriend.

“First of all, you’re not a jackass,” Veronica told him. “At least not anymore.”

“Comforting.” He sighed. “But true.”

She smiled slightly. “Second, she’s not my twin. I don’t know who she is, but her name’s Elle. And Elle, this is Logan.”

“Obviously.” Elle told the other two people in the room, and they both snorted in response. Of course she knew who he was, there was no one that didn’t.

“So, care to explain?” Logan asked Veronica.

She shrugged. “Not much to say, I ran into Elle a couple times before, that’s all, I don’t k now what she’s dong here now.” She looked to the other blonde in question. Logan could tell she was leaving something out, but he decided to let it be for now.

“Ronnie, you’re on, like, every news channel, everywhere. How could I not stop by? You are, after all, my favorite identical acquaintance.”

“Wow, touching gesture.” The sarcasm was evident in Veronica’s voice. Elle just smiled like a little girl who just hit the unicorn jackpot.

“How come she’s aloud to call you Ronnie?” Logan pouted.

Veronica smiled at the cuteness of it, setting her hand on his arm and turning to face Elle, the smile dropped from her face. “She’s not.” Elle gave a slight shrug and Logan’s pout ended abruptly.

“So you’re just here to check up on your “acquaintance” who just happens to look exactly like you?” He asked.

“Yup.” And then she moved towards them. “I was actually hoping I could ask you a few questions.”

“About what?” Veronica’s tone was suspicious. She liked being the one asking the questions.

“Well, you got locked in a burning fridge right?” Veronica and Logan grimaced. “Did I hit a nerve? Really? Too bad, this is important.”

“Oh, do you have some flowers for me, maybe a Get Well Soon balloon from the local Wal-Mart?” Elle definitely had hit a nerve on both their parts, and Veronica was quickly becoming defensive, grabbing Logan’s hand.

“Yeah, because I really shop at Wal-Mart.” Elle looked insulted. “Never mind, but this is important. How did you get out of the fridge?”

“You can see this on the news, jus flip over to CNN and they’ll tell you how my Dad saved me.”

“Yeah, but what’s the real story? Didn’t you, like, I don’t know, melt through the walls, maybe squirt some water out of you palm?”

Veronica momentarily forgot Logan was there, even with her hand in his. “Just because you go all Electra doesn’t mean I’ve got superpowers, too.”

Logan looked confused again and Elle looked insulted.

“Please, I outrank Electra so much, it’s unbelievable.” She scoffed.

“She does what?” He asked.

Veronica turned to Logan. “Can I talk to Elle alone for few minutes.”

“Veronica,“ He looked as if he was about to protest but then he remembered who he was talking to and reluctantly nodded.

He squeezed her hand softly and kissed her quickly on the cheek before turning to head into her room. On his way in he sent Elle a warning look which she returned with as reassuring of one as a girl like that could manage.

Veronica walked over to the sofa with Elle and they sat down next to each other.

“Look Elle, I know it may not be what you want to hear, but I’m not special. Not like you, I’m not really normal, either. At least my life isn’t normal, but I’m just an average person.”

“How does an average person survive a non-average life?” Elle asked.

“Okay, so maybe I’m not all that average, but I‘m not, I’m not like you.” She said, almost sounding a little guilty.

“Lucky you.” She sighed. “I’m just kinda tired of being alone.”

“I know the feeling. Are you the only one who’s, you know, special?” Veronica asked.

“Oh no, there are tons of us, but they don’t really…get me. Or like me either, they mostly think we’re the bad guys. We pretty much are but it’s for the greater good, so, It’s still okay, I guess…” She seemed to lose herself in her thoughts for a few seconds, then suddenly she snapped out of, a big, mocking grin appearing on her face.

“Well Ronnie, it was nice chatting with you.” She stood up and headed straight for the door, turning around to throw back a few words. “We’ll never see each other again.”

Veronica joined in on the “never”, knowing that was what Elle would say. “Of course we won’t, it’s not like you said that last time I saw you.”

“That was different, I said we probably won’t see each other again, this time it’s definite.”

“That make’s a huge difference.” Both girls smiled at one another.

“Have a good life, Veronica Mars.”

“I’ll try.”

“Bye-bye.” Elle waved and stepped out the door, letting it fall closed behind her.

“See you around.” Veronica said quietly after her, Elle didn’t hear of course, but Veronica had never intended her to.
