Title: The Last Class
Author: timesrunning
Beta: nevacaruso
Rating: PG (just to be safe)
Summary: The last class Shou Tucker takes from a professor proves to be inspirational.
Disclaimer: I own neither Full Metal Alchemist or X-men. These characters are the brain children of other people. I make no money off of this, and this story is for entertainment purposes only.
Characters Involved: Nathaniel Essex (Mr. Sinister) and Shou Tucker (The Sowing Life Alchemist)
Constructive Criticism: Welcomed and encouraged.

“In the end, unless we are willing to devote ourselves completely to our practice, to our way of life, what is the point of our attempts? We are meant for great things and as such we must be willing to make the necessary sacrifices,” Doctor Essex lectured. Most of the class by now had drifted off. The class was on the medical applications of alchemy. The theories that went into this sort alchemical work were complex enough. The topic was a potential breach of what was sanctioned by State Alchemy, the use of animals to better human lives, possibly even the creation of a new race of ‘super beings’ as Professor Essex referred to them.

Shou Tucker was not like most students. The talk of perfection, the devotion to the pursuit, was something he could only dream of. In reality, he was just a poor student, with one loan too many, and a girlfriend who had missed her period for over a month now. True, Shou was a gifted alchemist, he had ambition, but he didn’t really have anything to which he could apply his ambition. He didn’t have the knowledge necessary to guide that ambition. There wasn’t much of a future, his girlfriend had told him, but that was before he had gotten her knocked up. Now, she would have to marry him. He was good with kids. That was the one saving grace he had. He guessed he could go to work in the factory, give up all the dreams of ever really becoming a doctor like Essex.

The lecture ended and everyone got up to go, everyone except for Shou Tucker that was. He stayed behind, slowly packing his books. It would be his last class, he silently decided.

“Is there something wrong, Mr. Tucker?” Dr. Essex asked him. His voice was gentle, but it carried a great deal of persuasive power. Essex’s dark brown eyes were focused directly on Tucker, who just adjusted his glasses slightly. Many students called Dr. Essex sinister because of something they thought they saw in his eyes. The only thing that Shou Tucker saw in those eyes was greatness and the potential for it, no matter the cost.

“It is nothing Dr. Essex, I just thought I should let you know this will be my last class with you. My situation has changed significantly,” Shou explained.

“Really? That is a shame.”

“A shame?”

“Yes, of all of my students, you were the one of the few too understand the price of devotion, the necessity of sacrifice for greatness. There is much of myself that I see within you Shou Tucker.”

“I’m glad that you think so highly of me Dr. Essex. However I really can’t stay on, there’s no way I can afford it.”

“I could pay you to be my assistant, run some of the review sections. You are gifted Shou, don’t put your gift to waste.”

A long moment of silence passed between the two men. Shou meditated on what Dr. Essex had offered. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity, however his girlfriend had always hated Essex, and that last thing he wanted was any stress on the already fragile (perhaps even broken) relationship.

“I thank you for your kind offer Dr. Essex, but I will have to refuse,” Shou eventually voiced.

“Since you are no longer my student, I insist on you calling me Nathaniel.”

“Very well Nathaniel, I thank you for everything you taught me,” Shou said and stood up as he voiced his farewell.

“Just remember, there will come a time when you will have to make a sacrifice for the cause of greatness. I know that you will not disappoint me,” Nathaniel Essex, commented, his dark eyes narrowing slightly. It was only after Shou had left the lecture hall, the doors had been closed, and the window blinds drawn that Essex let out a low curse. He had lost another one, but he would not worry, that was not Essex’s style. He would find someone else who didn’t have Shou’s ties for his cause.
