[identity profile] kroton1.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] crossoverfic
I'm a moron, and I apologize. I only just recently read the rules of this community, and I'm very much aware that I haven't been following proper protocal up to this point. I want to apologize ahead of time for this, and I intend to do what's expected of me from this point on. I only have a few questions:

1) what is "flaming"

2) Define "Het or Slash"
3) Define "non-con"
4) What do you mean by "pairing"

In keeping with my new awareness of the rules and regulations, I wanted to bring to your attention that I have finished recent additions to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Doctor Who crossover. I hope all of you enjoy. The following is the required information:

Title: BTVS and The Scepter of Rassilon
Author: Edward Scott
Fandoms: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Doctor Who
Rating: General Audiences (I believe)
Warnings: None
Pairings: N/A
Character(s): Most characters featured during the 3rd season of BTVS, K-9, Cybermen, and Doctor Who
Summary: Spike finds an ancient and powerful artifact and forces the Scoobies to deal with this new threat, while a mysterious time traveler returns to Sunnydale to retrieve what he left behind.

As always.  Feedback is very very welcome and appreciated.  The story can be accessed by clicking on the comments button and then clicking on the link within.

Hopefully these definitions will be reasonably clear. Not everyone would agree with me, but you should get the general idea.

1) what is "flaming"

A flame is basically an attack on another person online. In the case of fan-fiction it might be something along the lines of, "This story sucks!" Basically, antagonism without useful content. It's different from criticism (even harsh criticism) in that it is in no way constructive. It is, as I said, an attack.

2) Define "Het or Slash"

Het stands for heterosexual. It implies that there is heterosexual adult content. Slash generally (this is one of the more contested ones in certain fandoms) indicates homosexual content, but not the rating. What I mean by this is that het usually means there is sexual content not suitable for the kiddies, but slash just implies a same-sex relationship, no actual sex necessary. Along with het and slash you will often see "gen" which means there is heterosexual content, but it's not adults-only. I'm actually not sure what "gen" is short for. Perhaps "general audiences?"

3) Define "non-con"

It stands for non-concensual sex or sexual activities. Rape, basically. Honestly, now that I'm thinking about it, the term kind of bothers me. Call rape what it is.

4) What do you mean by "pairing"

Pairing just means romantic pairing. Sometimes people are searching for a story that features a specific pairing of characters, or someone might like to avoid stories with certain pairings.

Hope that was helpful!

To add onto what [livejournal.com profile] graycardamon said about het/slash/gen... That's one way to view things but that's NOT how I typically come across things.

Het: Yes, heterosexual stuff. It means there's gonna be a male/female romantic (or sexual) pairing. Look at the rating or warnings to know if the story actually has any sex in it, because this label doesn't really way that.
Slash: This label is typically used for male/male pairings. Femslash is the more specific term for female/female pairings, although slash is sort of like saying "you guys" and thus includes women, too. Like it said above, it's a romantic or sexual pairing/activities in the story but not necessarily actual sex--check warnings and/or ratings to find out before you read.
Gen: this is where I'm gonna be getting away from [livejournal.com profile] graycardamon's definitions because only on het-only pages have I seen gen as the above definition. Gen typically means in my experience (and over at all the 100-words challenge lists I've had experience with, FYI) is that it is a non-pairing story. No romance (also sometimes seen as "no-romo" is fandoms like X-files where a romantic relationship is cannon). Gen signifies, often, a friendship fic of a single character sketch sort of piece.

I hope this helps as well. Just remember that you're going to have groups that have different definitions so if you really want to avoid something in particular, be sure to read all the notes/warnings/ratings. Slash writers will always label their stuff clearly. imho, het isn't labeled as well at times (but it depends on the author and their site, I don't find this to be the case on major archvies), and gen can sometimes be tucked away into corners....

LOL Yeah, you could say that. =) But there's so many choices and huge variety of ratings. *shrugs*

Happy ficcing!
