Summary: Victorian London is terrified by a series of mysterious, brutal murders and unsolved kidnappings, hotly investigated by the renowned detective Angel; can he solve the mystery before those responsible succeed in their nefarious plots to birth the ultimate creature of power? Or will he be defeated by opponents with powers that are a match and more for his own? At the same time, amidst the ever-shifting lines between good and evil, can confirmed rake, thief, and gambler Remy LeBeau manage to evade the entrapping web of his own criminal associations and defeat the Sherlockian mind of the vampire-turned-hero? Or will the sensual distraction of a beautiful American widow prove his downfall?

Previously:
Remy stared at himself in the mirror, his brows furrowing deeply. It was fortunate the communication between he and Sinister was one way only, or else he surely would have refused. Kill somebody? He was no murderer. Sinister was a murderer, and though Remy did the jobs he asked for and delivered the mutants he wanted, Remy never murdered any man or woman. He’d killed before, but always with cause. Always in self-defense. Never murder. “Dis one ain’t no assassin,” he muttered to himself.
He turned to leave, and froze again. He could run, take Rogue with him. But Sinister would be sure to follow. And Rogue would most assuredly draw his attention. If he ran, he had little more than what little fortune he could bring, and his own wits. If he did this, finished this one simple job, they could go with everything he had. His standing, his titles, his wealth all would be at their disposal. And there would be nobody behind them, nothing to look over his shoulder for. They would be free, to pursue their cure, to stay together wherever they wished to settle. He looked at himself in the mirror once again, and remembered those red and black eyes that had peered back at him from Rogue’s face. “Mark o’ de devil,” he whispered, and knew his decision was made.
He’d leave at sunset.
