Summary: Victorian London is terrified by a series of mysterious, brutal murders and unsolved kidnappings, hotly investigated by the renowned detective Angel; can he solve the mystery before those responsible succeed in their nefarious plots to birth the ultimate creature of power? Or will he be defeated by opponents with powers that are a match and more for his own? At the same time, amidst the ever-shifting lines between good and evil, can confirmed rake, thief, and gambler Remy LeBeau manage to evade the entrapping web of his own criminal associations and defeat the Sherlockian mind of the vampire-turned-hero? Or will the sensual distraction of a beautiful American widow prove his downfall?

Remy leaned back, his lips still close to Rogue's. "Chere," he whispered, his breath warm on her lips. He touched his thumb to her red mouth, swollen with their kisses. "Yes." He leaned forward and took her ear lobe in his mouth, sucking and nibbling it lightly.
His mouth was... astonishing. She paused, longer than she should have, savoring the sensual touch. "No," she said again at last, and shifted away from him in the bed. "Ah won't be... a convenience. Just because Ah can be touched now, that's a terrible reason. Why are y' doin' this... because Ah'm... what, here?" She raked her hands through her long hair, upset to note that they were shaking.
