“Welcome back SG-1. Well done. Adam, Duncan, Earth owes you a debt of gratitude,” General Hammond said as he shook their hands. The Immortals returned the hand shake. “Debriefing in one hour.”
“Yes, Sir,” Jack said. “Off to the Infirmary for more poking and prodding. Fun,” he said as he left the gate room with Carter, Teal’c, Adam and Duncan following immediately behind him.
SG-1 completed their physicals and had left the infirmary. Adam and Daniel were the last two to get checked out. Once they were given the all clear, they made their way to the debriefing.
“You know, I don’t understand why they bother giving us a physical,” Duncan said to Adam as they passed an airman in the hallway. “Our Quickening heals us and we know the Goa’uld can’t blend with us either.”
“True, but not everyone knows about our Immortality and I’d like to keep it that way,” Adam said quietly.
“I see your point. Everyone on SG-1 knows, but I think the exams make us appear one of their own. That should be worth the exam.”
“Your desire to fit in to society never ceases to amaze me, Duncan.”
“Ahh, Uhh…” Duncan started to respond, but they had arrived at the situation room. Adam sat down at the long table, nodding to Daniel and the others. Duncan walked to the credenza, pouring two cups of coffee. “Want cream and sugar?” he asked Adam.
“No, thanks. Black will do, but since you’re serving, I’ll take some water too.”
“I’ve only got two hands,” Duncan said as he showed them to Adam. He brought the coffee to the table and placed one cup in front of Adam. “Here’s your coffee. If you want water, get it yourself.”
“I really don’t want any,” Adam said.
“So, why’d you ask for it?”
“To see if you’d bring it,” Adam said, smiling at Duncan.
“Let’s start the debriefing,” General Hammond said as he sat down. “I understand you picked up some anti-Goa’uld weapons,” he said as he looked at Jack.
“Yes, Sir. Watched Adam smoke those fake ships out of the sky,” Jack said as he grinned widely. “Those Moriahans have some fancy technology and they’re willing to share.”
“I see. Adam, can you tell me about the weapons. I understand they are powered by your Quickening.”
Adam sat up in his chair and looked at General Hammond. “General, we’re glad to assist Earth in ridding itself of the Goa’uld; however, we can’t activate the machine in every battle,” Adam reminded General Hammond.
“I know son. Right now, I’m just happy to have a weapon we can use against them. The President is very excited about this and has asked to see a demonstration as soon as possible. With that in mind, a plane will be here within two hours to take us to New Mexico for a demonstration.”
--------------------------------
The President was waiting when they disembarked from the plane.
“Welcome back, SG-1. Adam and Duncan, I understand that you’ve brought back an anti Goa’uld ship weapon. I’m very anxious to see it in action,” the President said as he shook both their hands.
“We were glad to help, Sir. Anything to rid Earth of the Goa’uld is worth our efforts,” Adam said and he shook the President’s hand.
Daniel, Teal’c, Jack and General Hammond formed a circle with the Immortals.
Sam had been talking with an airman regarding her instructions that she had relayed. “We’ll need some decoys that have Naquada engines similar to the Goa’uld ships. The Moriahans said the weapon identifies the frequency of their engines,” Sam explained. “While we were flying, I spent the specifications of several Goa’uld ships to the engineers here. They are supposed to have a few small mock ups for Adam to demonstrate the machine.” She looked around for the remote control decoys she had discussed with the local engineers. After a short discussion with the chief engineer, she returned to the group. “They’ve rigged half dozen decoys with the specs for Adam to use. If you’ll all go to the right of the building there, you should avoid any of the blast,” Carter said as she pointed to an empty field next to the building.
“Glad you pointed that out,” Jack said. “I might have gotten confused which empty field to stand by. I mean there is only one building on the test field,” he said tongue in cheek.
Carter frowned, but didn’t respond. “Adam, the airman will release the decoy. If the machine fails, the decoy should fall into the lake.”
“Okay.”
Everyone except Adam and the airman shooting the decoys walked to the side of the building. There was a rope cordoning off the area.
The first decoy was sent in the air and everyone by the building watched as it soared into the sky. A large splash was seen from the lake. “We’ll that went well,” Jack said. “Try again, Carter.”
“Yes, Sir.”
“It doesn’t work,” Adam said after two additional splashes. He and Major Carter returned to the area where the rest of the team was watching.
“Sir, we watched the demonstration on Moriah and the device worked. Maybe this is a faulty device,” Jack said as he tried to explain the failures to the President and General Hammond. He stuck his hands in his pockets and looked to his teammates for other answers.
“No, I took the device straight from Julos after the last demonstration on Moriah,” Carter said. “Every switch and mechanism is here like it was on the planet. I just don’t understand.”
Adam looked at his friends, seeing their disappointment. “Salom said that no one could operate the devices and that is why they have never traded them. While they do have a Quickening, their race is not Immortal.”
“The tablets talk about a race with Quickening Energy. It never said they were Immortal. The Moriahans have children and they die, maybe the Ancients understood that the energy was the weapon,” Daniel said as he talked out loud quietly to himself. He crossed his arms across his chest as he stood silently for a few minutes. “Adam, you’ve lived on our planet for over 5,000 years and maybe during that time, Ancients came to our planet. They noticed your Quickening and witnessed “the game”. They also traveled to many other planets and it’s possible that they traveled to Moriah. They saw the same Quickening and thought that they were Immortal too.”
“But the device worked on Moriah,” Sam said as she looked at the small crowd of people. “It really doesn’t matter if they’re Immortal or not. If it worked there, it should work here. After all, Julos said it was the Quickening energy that made it work.”
“You’re right, but why won’t it work here if it worked there?” Adam asked.
“Maybe there is something about the planet that is the key,” Daniel said. Daniel paced back and forth in the small area as he gathered his thoughts.
“That could explain the references on the tablets. The tablets referred to a weapon that is released from energy. It talks about the people using the weapon, but it appears that we put the two together when there really isn’t a connection,” Adam clarified.
“But, I still think the Quickening is a connection. I’d like to find out more about the Moriahans. Find out about their quickening, how they developed the weapon, why the Goa’uld don’t come looking for their destroyed Hateks. Maybe there are answers and things we could learn from them to assist in our fight,” Daniel said. He raised his eyebrows and furrowed his brow as he looked at General Hammond.
“Son, you have some very good reasons to go back to the planet. Write up a proposal and I’ll review it for another mission. Since it is no longer first contact, another SG team will make the trip. I’ll keep you informed of their progress,” General Hammond responded as he acknowledged Daniel’s request.
“Yes, Sir,” Daniel replied as he sighed in defeat again.
‘Since we’re finished here, the plane will take us back to the Mountain. SG-1 will have three days down time,” General Hammond said. “President, I will keep you apprised of the situation. If we are able to operate the weapon, you will be notified.”
“Of course,” the President said. “It was a pleasure seeing you again, Adam and Duncan. Our government thanks you for your continued efforts in our fight against the Goa’uld.”
“Aye, Mr. President. We want to rid Earth of the Goa’uld as much as you do,” Duncan said as he shook the President’s hand.
The members of the SGC saluted the President as he turned and walked toward Airforce 1. When he boarded the plane, they returned to the plane that had brought them from the SGC. Adam and Duncan followed.
“I’m sorry, Daniel. I thought we had a real shot this time,” Jack said as he placed his hands in his pockets.
“Me too,” Daniel said as he crossed his hands against his chest.
“Adam, thank you for trying. I guess you won’t have to worry about that cargo ship full of Immortals,” Daniel said.
Jack gave Daniel and Adam a questioning look.
“I’ll explain later,” Daniel said as he walked up the stairs to the plane.
“This ought to be good,” Jack said.
“So we can’t kill the Goa’uld with your Quickening. I guess we’ll have to keep shooting them the old fashioned way,” Jack said as he stepped into the plane.
“Yeah, I guess,” Adam agreed.
After the plane landed, Duncan and Adam stayed at the SGC for a few days. Adam studied the tablets for additional clues and Duncan taught a few more martial arts classes.
On the morning of the third day, Duncan came in to Daniel’s office. “Adam, I think its time to go home. I don’t think we can do anything more to fight the Goa’uld.”
“I guess you’re right. There’s not much more we can do here. We can leave tomorrow.”
SG-1 and Adam and Duncan went to dinner that evening.
Daniel looked at the menu, then placing it on the table in front of him. “It’s been a pleasure working with you again, Adam,” Daniel said. “I always am challenged when we are together.”
“I’m sorry that the weapon didn’t work. I would have liked to study the Moriahans longer,” Adam said. He took a drink of his beer and peeled the label on the bottle.
“You are a formidable warrior, Duncan MacLeod and it has been a pleasure working with you as well,” Teal’c said.
“Thank you, Teal’c. Like you, I have many years of practice,” Duncan said as he bowed his head in an honorary nod.
“I’m sure Daniel will call if he finds any other references to Immortals,” Jack said.
‘I’m going to do some analysis on the Moriahan machine; try to see if I can determine what the problem is,” Carter said. She picked up a roll and buttered it, then took a bite.
They finished dinner and enjoyed each other’s company. Adam and Duncan returned to their home the following day.
Epilogue:
SG-7 went to the planet and brought back the machine, explaining to the Moriahans what had occurred. The Moriahans were very willing to assist in discovering the problem. Medical data was obtained from the Moriahans and compared to the data the SGC had on Adam and Duncan. While normally Adam and Duncan did not willingly submit to medical tests, they were given physicals after each off world mission and this information was available for review. It was easier to keep their Immortality a secret if they were not given special treatment.
After several months of investigation SG-1 was called into the situation room to discuss the findings.
“I assume you all remember your visit to the Moriahans several months ago where you found the energy weapon,” General Hammond asked as he reviewed his notes.
“Yes,” Jack said as he looked at the folder with the SGC insignia given to him by the airman.
“We think we have an explanation for the problem. “I’ll turn it over to Dr. Frasier to explain.”
Dr. Frasier opened her folder and shifted through several pieces of paper before beginning. “It appears that the blood work completed from the Moriahans and Duncan and Adam is very similar, but with a few anomalies. These are the same anomalies that we think make them Immortal. However, the planet’s atmosphere is very different than Earth. There is more Ozone in their planet and their gate also exhibits a higher level of Ozone and Freon then other gates in this region. We have conducted numerous tests and feel with a great degree of certainty that these differences make the weapon unusable on Earth.” Janet looked at each member of SG-1 as she spoke.
“So you’re saying, if Earth had more Freon and Ozone, we could operate the weapons?” Daniel asked, amazed the answer was a logical scientific one. He intertwined his fingers of his hands as they rested on the table.
“Yes. We’ve done some additional testing with the weapon, using Adam and Duncan in settings where those levels are equivalent to those on Moriah and the device works,” Janet stated.
“Well if it’s that easy, why don’t we just build special rooms in a ship where they can fire the weapon?” Jack asked. He waved his hand and then pointed his finger toward Janet as he finished his question.
“If only if were that easy. There was no way to keep the gas inside the small chamber without affecting other crew members. It would have been too dangerous,” General Hammond said, his voice firm and somber.
“I can see that would be a problem,” Jack said as he folded his fingers into a triangle.
“Wait a minute, are you saying you involved Adam and Duncan in experiments?” Daniel asked as his face went ashen and he slammed his hand down on the table. “We promised them they would be safe and …”
“Hold on son,” General Hammond said as he held up his hand to quiet Daniel. “They volunteered to participate. I think they were as disappointed as we were that the device didn’t work.”
“Sorry, General.”
“No need to apologize. I appreciate your concern.” General Hammond looked at his team, nodding to each person with a slight dip of his head. “Okay people, we have a planet to protect. Your next mission will be tomorrow at 12:00 and you will gate to PX-752. Mission briefings are in your boxes. Dismissed.” General Hammond stood up, exiting the room.
The members of the premier team looked at each other, smiled and walked out of the room. Daniel said to Jack, “Want a cup of coffee?”
Jack turned toward Daniel, “Sure. Teal’c, Sam- We’re heading to the commissary for some coffee. Wanna come? I hear they have blue Jell-O today.”
“Excellent,” Teal’c answered.
“Sir,” Sam responded as she joined her team mates.
They walked to the commisary as they speculated on the new mission for tomorrow.
The end.
