Title: Hunter/Hunted, Chapter 12 – Ambushes
Author:
vikingprincess
(chapters 1-8 by both
vikingprincess and
adarkershade_x)
Fandoms: Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel and X-Men (616 with a dash of Evolution and a smidgeon of Movie-verse regarding characters, not plot)
Characters: Angelus/Rogue, Xander, ensemble from both X-Men and BtVS/AtS
Rating: Mature Adult/NC-17 (nudity, language, violence, sexual situations, death)
General Spoilers: Through NFA, S5 Angel. All of BtVS S1-7, but excludes most of S8. Barely-there hints of X-men 616 Civil War/Mutant Registration.
Updates: Extremely irregular....
Highlight: For additional warnings. Click the link only for spoilers! There will be character deaths (multiple, in both flashbacks and as the story progresses). IMO, the story’s better if you don’t know ahead of time who has died, or how. If you really want to know so that it doesn’t shock you, you can click here for deaths explicitly mentioned in this and prior chapters.

Summary:
In a post-NFA world, Angel has lost everything: his Shanshu signed away, his friends dead... and his soul gone, worn to nothing but rags that aren’t enough to stop Angelus from rising to take control. Humans are hard to find, most far too fragile to have survived the Apocalypse. But a new breed of prey has emerged from the ashes... or perhaps they were there all along. Mutants. Angelus discovers that prey that fights back just… tastes better.
Nuclear War becomes the final solution of terrified humans, running scared from Homo Superior. Billions die to slaughter a few thousands... civilization will never rise again. But in the ashes of a terrifying new world, Rogue discovers that mutants aren't all that humans should have been fearing, and that demons think mutants are just a little more fun to hunt. Rogue would much rather be the hunter than the hunted.
Previously:
“Shut th’ hell up,” Rogue finally screeched at them, bringing the little cavalcade to a startled halt. “What is wrong with all of y’all? Ain’t a one of y’ here as didn’t want to be, so why’s it so hard to work t’gether an’ get along?”
“This is just walking, it’s totally not worki—“ Carrie started.
“Me, human. Him, monster,” Xander interjected, pointing.
“I have to entertain myself some—“
“He’s a demon anyways, he’s soo not on our team! And you’re weird t—“
“Little girl, you’re just a super-sized blood-bag—“
“Come over here and say that,” Carrie shrieked, spinning her bat menacingly. Rogue angled between them even as Angelus stepped forward to slam into her back. Her feet slid a little in the sandy ground alongside the freeway, and in the volatile moment of silence between four-way glares and the unleashing of deadly force from several directions at once, Xander, crossbow in his hands and aimed unerringly at Angelus’ eye, since Rogue blocked his chest, chimed in.
“Mom, are we there yet?”
The tableau held for a tense moment, and then everyone with a pulse burst into howls of laughter… even Angelus snickered, and stepped back.
Rogue wanted to kiss Xander for his timing, and would have, if not for the whole coma and death restriction imposed by her powers. Maybe this strange alliance of vampire and vampire Slayer, human and mutant, would work out after all….
