Monday morning found Phil peering out of the blinds, spying on the new neighbors.
He should have been at work or something. Maybe. Who knows.
“What's going on?” Alex asked, walking over to her father.
“If a squirrel got electrocuted again--” Haley warned.
“Neighbors!” Phil exclaimed. “New neighbors! But there are more than one new neighbors, so I guess it's new...neighborses?”
On the couch, Claire explained the situation. “We have new neighbors, the Winchesters and the Bluths. Yes, those Bluths. I'm sure they're both perfectly nice families.”
She stared at the camera, not wanting to say any more—especially not what she was saying earlier, about those dirty, scummy, trashy Bluths and 'there goes the neighborhood.'
“Luke, go look out the other window. And if you see anything interesting, tell me.” Phil said. Luke obliged. Almost immedietely, he gasped in awe, which made his father excited. “What? What is it?”
“Look at all those boxes. It's like a parade.”
Mitchell, Cameron and Lily were taking a walk to greet the new neighbors. The first one they saw was a man in a trenchcoat, looking around vacantly with a trace of a smile.
“My, aren't you hot!” Cameron said, then realized Mitchell's fierce glare. “My, aren't you hot? In that trenchcoat and suit?”
“I'm Cas,” Castiel said. “I like your baby.”
“Thank you,” Mitchell said, still thinking that Cameron's slip did not bode well for either of them. “Her name is Lily.”
“So...is it just you or--?” Cameron asked.
“No, I'm here with the Winchesters. Dean and Sam. They're my friends,” Cas said, almost proud.
“That's nice of them,” Mitchell said.
“Giving up their privacy like that,” Cameron said. Mitchell gave him a Look.
“OK, so, we made assumptions about the new couples,” Cameron confessed on the couch.
“Yes, their privacy was very important,” Castiel did not seem fazed. “But they wanted to settle down after so many years of privacy.”
Cameron shot Mitchell a triumphant smile.
“Well, they seem very nice,” Cameron said. “And secure in their relationship.”
“Yes, they are. They are very close. It is beautiful.”
Mitchell and Cameron smiled warmly at their new neighbor.
“It is almost lunch time,” Castiel said. “Would you like to join us for lunch? I don't think Dean and Sam will mind, as long as I eat meat products. Dean said I need more protein.”
“Oh, honey,” Cameron said.
“You know what they say about assumptions,” Mitchell said.
The Impala pulled up to the house. The brothers got out, and Castiel approached them, leaving Mitchell, Cameron and Lily sitting on the porch.
“I invited guests,” Castiel said. “They are nice. They have a baby. I told them I liked the baby and I invited them for lunch.”
Dean laughed. “Wow, you made friends, huh?”
“No,” Castiel said. “Yes. I don't know.” He smiled because Dean was smiling.
“Well, that won't be a problem,” Sam said.
“Oh, hi, I'm sorry—Cas invited us--” Mitchell said.
“No worries,” Dean said.
“Oh. My. God,” Cameron said, catching glimpse of the Winchesters. Mitchell could not believe Cameron, twice in one day. Sure, the family was attractive-- movie-star attractive--but that did not mean-- “That is a 1967 Chevy Impala.”
Dean beamed. “That's right.”
“Oh, the car,” Mitchell said. He was a little disappointed. He'd already had his whole big speech planned.
“She is gorgeous,” Cameron said breathlessly.
Mitchell and Sam both rolled their eyes as Castiel took the groceries in.
“Apparently it's a nice car,” Mitchell said lightly.
“Apparently,” Sam said. “Hi, I'm Sam Winchester.”
“Mitchell Pritchett,”
“That baby is adorable,” Sam said.
“Her name is Lily,” Mitchell said.
“Dean loves kids,” Sam said, then with a slight sarcasm, “He takes great care of his baby.”
Mitchell was taken by pleasant surprise, so enthralled by this perfect couple that he didn't catch the sarcasm. “You--he--?”
And then Mitchell realized that Sam meant the car.
“So, what do you do?” Sam asked over lunch.
“I'm a lawyer,” Mitchell said. Sam immedietely launched into a discussion of the career while Dean and Cameron rolled their eyes.
“I'm a, uh, mechanic,” Dean said to Cameron, under Sam and Mitchell's chatter.
“Dean is good with cars,” Castiel offered.
“It was at that moment that I saw tragedy under that mask of happiness,” Cameron said.
“Oh, please,” Mitchell scoffed.
“Castiel was hopelessly in love with Dean, that poor thing, and Dean was leading him on,”
“Oh please,” Mitchell repeated.
“We've both finished eating,” Castiel pointed out to Cameron.
“Why don't you show Cameron around the house?” Dean suggested.
“Yes, I'd love to see your home,” Cameron said.
He had ulterior motives, and Mitchell could sense it.
“Why don't we wait?” Mithcell said, not wanting to let Cameron out of his sight.
“No, no, you two finish talking law,” Cameron said.
“Cameron--” Mitchell said, but Cameron was quickly ushering Castiel out of the kitchen.
Cameron was good at faking interest and admiration when really, he just wanted to help Castiel's broken heart.
“The tour was so painful. He kept telling me about Dean: Dean this, Dean that. How could I not do anything?”
“Um--”
“OK, let me rephrase that: How could I have a heart and not do anything?”
“Dean and Sam got into an argument about--” Castiel said, gesturing to furniture that Cameron couldn't care less about.
“Cas, Cas. You have to let him go.”
Castiel tilted his head. “Who?”
“Dean, Cas. Dean. I know it hurts that he's with Sam, but you have to let it go.”
“I gripped him tight and raised him from Perdition,” Castiel said, confused.
“Whatever you did, he's with Sam now.”
“He's always been with Sam,” Castiel said. “They're brothers.”
“I know, sweetie, I know,” Cameron soothed, not comprehending the last part because he was so absorbed in the drama. “But you're gonna have to learn to--”
“Woah, woah, woah,” Dean's voiced came booming from downstairs. “You thought we were a couple?!”
Cameron ran down to see what had happened. Castiel lingered, then slowly walked behind him.
“I'm sorry, I thought--” Mitchell said.
“We're brothers!” Dean said.
“You, um, you misunder—I have a case to um, Cameron, honey, let's go.” Mitchell quickly gathered Lily. “It was nice meeting you—all of you—I'm so sorry.”
Mitchell and Cameron uttered niceties as they hurredly showed themselves out, just before hearing Dean's exasperated “Why does everyone think we're gay?!”
“They're nice, “Sam said.
“Yes.” Dean grunted. “Nice.”
“I mean, it was awkward--”
“Awkward,” Dean repeated.
“But, you know—it's more of a reflection on them than us,” Sam said. “But they're nice.”
“They sure are,” Dean growled.
