Hermione watched as Speed swallowed the veritaserum in one gulp, knowing that she'd have several hours to make sure everything was fine before it began to wear off. If anyone finds out how much I just dosed him with... She shook her head at that thought, waiting for the potion to take effect, moving quickly to settle Speed on the bench when he swayed.

A little too much, perhaps. That was not supposed to be an effect.

"Tim?"

"That's what most people call me. My boss calls me Speed, though. So do a couple of my co-workers. My mom still calls me Timothy when she..."

"Hush. I know." Hermione shoved her arithmancy equations to one side, sitting on the table, keeping a careful eye on Speed's face, and his reactions to the veritaserum. "Has anyone been following you lately?"

"No."

"Anything weird happen in the last month?" Hermione spoke before he could ramble off on a tangent. One of the things she hated about using veritaserum, but she didn't have time to waste second-guessing his answers without it.

"Other than you showing up on the beach tonight, and kidnapping me with a newspaper, and making me drink something that has me babbling out the first thing that comes into my head, nothing weird. Nothing weird like the weird stuff that happens when you're around, anyway. There was the neighbor's cat getting killed. Someone cut the thing's throat, and left it in the hallway outside my door. Freaked out the poor kid..."

"What kind of cat?"

"A tabby cat, not really more than a kitten. The kid got it a month ago."

"Anything else, right around then? Anything at all, it doesn't matter how non-magical it seemed at the time."

"Nothing, Hermione. Just the cat, and now you kidnapping me with the newspaper. Today's weirder than the whole month put together already."

Hermione reached up to place her fingers over his mouth, quieting him for now. Her mind was racing as she tried to think of who might have found out where she went on her "holidays", other than Harry or McGonagall. "Has anyone new moved into the building, Tim? Anyone at all, since you met me."

Speed rubbed at the back of his head a moment. "A couple of college girls on the floor above me, and an older woman on the ground floor, in a wheelchair. The girls don't stay around the building much, I don't think I've seen them more than a couple times since they moved in. And the old lady stays in her apartment all the time. A kid comes by every day with meals for her, stays just long enough to drop the food off. I think she has a full-time nurse, too, not sure about that."

Hermione let out a frustrated sigh. Maybe they hadn't gotten to Speed, but she didn't trust that the murdered cat was entirely coincidence. "Anyone new at work?"

"No. Or if there's someone new, no one's told me yet, and I haven't met them. Might..."

"Hush." Hermione pinched the bridge of her nose. "Any blank spots in your memory?"

"No." Speed shook his head, and she reached out to rest a hand against his cheek, stopping the movement, and keeping him looking at her. She wished she could reach into his mind, but legilimancy was something she hadn't taken the time to learn yet. Not with her other projects on the burner.

"I'll be right back. I should have an antidote around for the veritaserum. It might not neutralize all of it, so you're likely to be inclined to tell me more than I need to know if I ask you a question, and the literal truth, for a while yet. The effects will wear off, sooner or later." Hermione stood, rummaging in the cabinet above Speed's head a moment, before handing him the vial of antidote. "Drink it. It will help."
