Title: In Your Eyes
Author: A. Rae

Pairing/Characters: Dawn/Sam, Buffy, Dean
Rating: PG
Summary: Sam and Dawn do research.

"Now I know you're lying." Sam stated. he tried, but he couldn't keep the amusement out of his tone. Shaking his head and chuckling softly Sam got up from the table. He and Dawn had been researching for forever and his long legs were screaming at him for lack of use. They had been at this for six hours. Sure that wouldn't receive the medal for longest research party, but it was long enough. Plus with Dawn's revelation that the, how had she worded it, ah yes the one eyed, one horned, flying purple people eater was real, he knew they both desperately needed a break.

Without looking up Dawn replied in an even tone. "Believe what you want, but it's true. You haven't been here long enough to see all the fugly and truly creepifying things that go bump in the night around this place. It's not a dimensional hot spot for nothing." Glancing back down at the book a light smile touched her lips. She was amused that she'd made the-oh-so-secure-in-his-vast-knowledge doubt himself. She couldn't help but smirk. His slightly wide-eyed expression was truly priceless. Where's a camera when you need it.

"Did you just say fugly? Sam chortled. He couldn't contain it anymore and bust out laughing.

What was so amusing. He didn't get to laugh at her. Only certain people could do that. And he hadn't earned the right. "What's wrong with fugly? It's a perfectly good word." Dawn huffed.

Sensing the edge in her voice Sam tried to calm himself. "Sorry. I didn't mean to offend you. It's just that your spending way too much time around my brother."

"Because I said fugly?" Dawn asked slightly confused. She really didn't know what to think of this guy. Fine, lets not lie. She might not know what to make of him at times, but she knew how she felt about him.

"Yeah. Fugly's quintessential Dean. It just sounds a little funny coming from a girl." Sam explained as he seat back in his chair.

Dawn was outraged. Shoving herself up and away from the table, she started her tirade. "Girl?!? That's all I am to you, isn't it? Just a poor helpless girl. No Dawn, you can't patrol with Buffy and Dean, it's too dangerous. You might hurt your delicate sensibilities." Anger coursed through her veins as she paced behind her chair. Everyone sucked. That's all there was to it. When were people going to see she wasn't eleven anymore. She was eighteen for crying out loud. But what hurt her the most was Sam thinking she was a little kid. Tears stung at the corners of her eyes, but she refused to cry. Baby's cry and Dawn was most definitely not a baby.

Shocked by her outburst, Sam hurriedly tried to explain himself. The thought of her being mad at him upset him more than he cared to think about. "I meant girl as in gender, not age. I'm sorry I upset you."

Sighing Dawn slid back into her chair, dejectedly putting her head into her hands. Although the anger lessened at his clarification, she still felt hurt. But that was rapidly being replaced with embarrassment. "Sorry I went all psycho chick on you. If you didn't guess, that's a touch subject." Sheepishly she looked up trying to convey how sorry she truly was with her eyes and a soft smile. She couldn't make her smile any bigger. Not when she knew any chance of her and Sam becoming anything went from not likely to now beyond far fetched.

On a decidedly bold not, Sam walked over to Dawn. The bold wasn't in going to her, but in the putting his arm around her to try and comfort her. This felt right. He pushed the thought away. "No need to be sorry. I've been in your shoes before. Getting people to see you for who you truly are is daunting to say the least." Dawn chuckled leaning into Sam's embrace. He could get use to this. "I won't give you the trite 'enjoy you youth while you can' speech, but trust me when I say that sometimes when they finally do see the real you, you'll wish they hadn't. Being held accountable for your own actions can be a bitch."

Dawn couldn't help but laugh at that. She knew Sam was only trying to make her feel better and her appreciation of him grew ten fold for the effort. Raising her head to look at his face, Dawn's smile grew. "You're a pretty alright guy, you know."

"I have my moments." He didn't know what possessed him to do it, but he leaned in further and placed a small kiss on Dawn's lips. Once he saw the look in her eyes, both surprise and joy, he knew whatever it was could posses him anytime it liked. He leaned back in for a longer kiss meeting Dawn half way.

"What the hell?"

Sam and Dawn look up to see a very pissed off Buffy and an amused Dean.

"Alright Sammy! I knew you had it in you." Dean beamed with brotherly pride.

"You're supporting this? Are you completely insane?" Buffy glared harder at Dean with every word.

"What? They're both adults. And obviously they like each other. Not seeing the problem."

"No. The problem is that's my baby sister you're talking about."

"Your eighteen year old, baby sister. That makes her an adult and legal in my book and everywhere else for that matter."

Buffy glared at him. Hands on her hip and face contorted in anger.

Realizing that these two would be at it for a while she stood up taking Sam by the hand to go outside. She had every intention of finishing what they started. Sam liked her. Dean not only seemed to approve, but also saw her as an adult. And Buffy, well even though she was being a huge pain right now, Dawn knew it came from a place of love and protection. All was right in the world.

The End
