“I could find you across vast oceans, Sawyer, hide all you wish but know I will always be one step behind you.”
Night after night I would whisper my dark nothings into her eager ears, knowing that my words would haunt her dreams and turn them into night terrors, hoping that our time would never come to an end.
(brushing my bloody finger tips over her angel white locks polluting another innocent little girl)
“I’ll watch you, just you, Peyton, no other blond cheerleader will have my dark heart like you do.”
Before I slip back into the shadows, those lonely things that are now my permanent place in the world, I kiss her eye lids wondering if one day they might open up to see her deadly guardian.
-
“You dropped this, miss.”
Hidden behind a pair of familiar glasses, becoming the man I once was for moment before the monster comes roaring back, I take this minute of conversation and brushing hands as I give her the swiped wallet.
(doing this every month has begun to make her take a second look at my smiling face)
“Thanks! I would be dead if I lost this.”
Out comes that addicting smile of hers, I try to get as many hits of it as I can before some other person gets to bask in its glory, and brings out my own horrible one.
“I-It was nothing.”
With another thank you that sounds sincere only on her lips she walks away from this stranger, not knowing that I know her better than any other, and it kills me as she gives that smile to him.
(what little dreams I have are filled with the many ways I could end him and they never get old)
“Goodbye, Miss Sawyer.”
-
“Can I keep you, Peyton?”
As I whisper forbidden words into her ears, wondering what monsters I place in her mind every night, resisting the urge to rip her disgusting wedding gown into nothing.
(wanting to use all these damn powers of mine to melt that rock on her finger and whisk her away from here)
For the first time in all of my midnight visits, staring the night she had danced in front of me as the angel of death my only friend in the world, those green eyes watched me right back.
(later on her lips would be on my ears whispering dark nothings right back to me)
Those smooth hands that I only dreamed of holding, afraid that my rough and crimson hands would end up breaking them, grabbed my own and pulled me closer than ever before.
“Don’t you already own me, Gabriel? My very own boogeyman, turning my dreams into his own world, you made me yours so long ago, darling.”
Before I could ask if this was a dream, or tell this delicate creature that I would bring nothing but death, that smile of hers made my thoughts disappear and those lips made the rest of me melt away.
“Gabriel, you were always one step behind me, but I was always one ahead.”
