“So. When did you die?” Associate Director Kersh looked at Agent Dana Scully over the top of his reading glasses.
“Around 9pm on Tuesday night, sir,” she answered. Her hand involuntarily touched the bandage on the right side of her neck. “Blood loss.”
“I see.” He glanced back down at the report in front of him. “And a twenty-year-old, 90-pound girl saved your life, when neither you nor your partner could fight off your attacker. Even with government training.”
“I think, sir, that you underestimate Buffy Summers. And she’s twenty-one.”
“Nevertheless, agent.” Kersh didn’t finish his sentence. Instead, he took off his glasses and stood, walking across the room as he spoke. “Agent Mulder believes that you were attacked by a vampire, and that Ms. Summers.” He stopped and sighed. “*Buffy* Summers. Is some sort of superhero.”
Scully spoke without looking at him. “I know what Agent Mulder believes, I’ve read the report myself,” she turned to look at him, “…sir.”
Kersh was visibly annoyed with her. “And what do you believe happened, Agent Scully?”
“To be honest, sir,” she answered, standing and making the respectful title sound like an insult, “I don’t know what happened in that cemetery the other night. What I do know is that cutting the funding to the X-files division so that the agents investigating the case can no longer afford to stay in Sunnydale and *investigate* is not the way to solve the crime.”
“Agent Scully, you were sent to investigate a murder. You were there for a week without results. I made the decision – “
“You made the decision to shut us down long ago, sir. You were just looking for an opening. And I don’t think I need to remind you that three days out of that week were spent in a hospital.”
“The FBI does not condone such blatant disrespect for authority, Agent Scully. I expected you to be more reasonable than your partner,” Kersh said.
“Well, sir, with all due respect, your expectations of me in a number of respects seem to have fallen short.”
Kersh looked like he was working hard to restrain himself. “Agent Scully, the Bureau does not need an agent – “
“Sir, I think what you’re saying is that the Bureau does not need an agent like me. And I’ll save you the trouble of dismissing me yourself. I quit.”
“Agent Scully - ”
“*Doctor* Scully. I quit.” And she stormed out of the office.

It wasn’t until the elevator was halfway to the basement when the full force of what she’d just done hit her. She’d just quit the FBI. Sure, she hadn’t handed in her official letter of resignation (unless writing “Fuck off” on a piece of paper and signing her name counted, which she wasn’t entirely sure about), but after the scene in Kersh’s office, she was fairly certain changing her mind wasn’t an option anymore. So what the hell was she going to do?
She looked down and saw the report she’d forgotten she still had clutched in her hand. Might as well finish what she’d started, she figured. She would like to find out who or what exactly had killed her. “Sunnydale, California. Why the hell not.”
