There is, from what I'm seeing, the possibility of LiveJournal rolling out yet another change that may or may not be particularly appealing (I do not have enough information to say for myself, and I won't say for others). I have a Dreamwidth community set up for mirroring this community, but I have not made any move to import the community yet, because I'd rather ask what people here would like to do. If you'd rather me import the community, or some other manner of collecting links for the stories there (or elsewhere) in case of something going borked if/when LJ does another change.

The only thing I have already put on the Dreamwidth community is the same set of rules, and the - admittedly brief - explanation of some of the newer tags I've been slowly getting onto back entries and trying to get on newer entries as they come up. I don't know how many people here have an account over there, or how many - if any - want to see posts from here also over there.

Any opinions or suggestions on this are welcome, and I'm not going to put up a poll with limited options. I really would prefer to see what people think on this - and I need to know what others think before I can make a decision on what to do beyond what I've already done.

And of course, anyone is welcome to post to the Dreamwidth community as well as to here.

Tags - an update concerning ongoing changes

As I've been working through tags, I've been consolidating some of the tags for entries that aren't stories. I've also been eliminating some that are either only used for one or two entries (particularly when they can be combined with others) or are used only in conjunction with other tags that are more readily descriptive of what they are.

One of the consolidated tags is "!non-fic" - this is where the tags for essays, discussion and commentary have been rolled into. As has one entry that's solely an announcement of a news item, rather than a promotion of something.

The "!announcement" tag has being eliminated - all but two entries were also tagged "!promo", which was more descriptive of their purpose. The other two, one was the above-mentioned entry, and the second was promoting an auction, and thus was re-tagged as "!promo".

The "!icons" tag has also been eliminated, and the sole entry tagged as such tagged as "!graphics".

In part this is because there is a limit to tags, and I'd prefer to have more open for fandoms. Part of this is decluttering where there were multiple tags with entries that are all very similar.

You may also notice tags being given their "fandom:" designation, and others gaining an exclamation mark at the beginning. Those that have gained the "fandom:" designation at the beginning are ones where I have gone through and made sure all the old entries are tagged with the appropriate "rating:" and "category:" tag (save for a couple rather large fandom tags). The fandoms with fewer entries are being dealt with first. The ones gaining an exclamation mark at the beginning are ones that are non-fandom tags that I've found while sorting.

Reminder, polls!

I just wanted to remind everyone that we have polls going on for your opinions on whether or not this community should switch to moderated posting and a possible new format for tags. This comm has over 1,500 members and only about 30 people have voted in each poll. I'd really like to see more of you participate and offer your opinion. The polls won't be open forever! :)

To mod or not to mod?

Hi, I'm sailorhathor, I'm one of your new moderators. If there's one thing I write a lot of, it's fanfic crossovers, so when the comm was offered up by the old mod, I quickly said yes, I'd love to take it over. morgynleri_fic did also and so, we became co-mods, and the rest is history. I thought I'd start things off with a poll about whether or not this community should be moderated.

Currently, the community is set to Moderate new members. That means that whenever someone joins, they have to be approved by one of us before they can post anything. This is to weed out spammers. The only problem is, sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between a spambot and a person who is simply new to LJ. What I'm afraid will happen is that either a spambot will slip through or a newbie will be rejected from this community when they haven't done anything wrong.

What I prefer is that anyone can join the community, but everyone is on Moderated Posting until they post something that proves they're not a spambot. Meaning that as soon as you post a fic/link to your fic, you'll be taken off Moderated Posting and can post at will. I've done this for years in most of the other communities I moderate, and it works very well. You should see some of the nasty porn spam I've caught and kept off my communities. (No, seriously, I took screenshots of some of it for those who want examples.) I'm sure we've all seen porn spam get posted to a comm and had to bleach our eyeballs afterward. Hey, I'm all for porn, just not surprise! some chick's business all up on my friends page!

Also, we will take a look at the community and see who has posted things recently and take those people off moderated status. You can also respond to this post and say, "I am not a spambot!" and we'll make sure you are unmodded too.

That is, if that's what you guys want. As a new mod, I am not going to assume that you guys want any major change to the community without checking with you first. So, here's your chance to voice your opinion! Please take this poll and tell us what you think. Do you think this sounds like a good system for avoiding spam, or not?

Hello all. A while ago, our previous mod, fikgirl asked for volunteers to take over the com. Myself and sailorhathor have volunteered and been given the job.

What this means for the com is mostly that it keeps going, and doesn't die for lack of tending to things.

It also means a few new tags, which I'll be trying to tag past entries with over the next couple of weeks or so, and will explain here. I will be going through older entries and doing my best to tag any that aren't tagged, and working on creating any new fandom tags that might be needed.

I'd still appreciate if you tagged your own entries, both with the fandom tags and with rating and category tags. However, failing to do so will just mean I do so when going through new entries for the week and making sure things are tagged.

The change in moderators also means some other possible changes, which I will leave for sailorhathor to explain later, as she's got a better idea on what she's planning with that (and polling for).

New tags:

Rating tags

These aren't G-NC17 like the US movie ratings, but closer to what we see on AO3, as well as an "unrated" tag for those who prefer not to rate their fics.

"All" is something that's acceptable for anyone to read.
"Teen" would be rated PG or PG13, or "teen" on AO3.
"Adult" would be ratedd R or NC17, or "mature" or "explicit" on AO3.
"Unrated" is just that, and anything without a rating in the header will be tagged with this. It does not mean the person needs to rate their fic.

"Rating: help!" will also be there for those who'd like to rate their fic, and are uncertain what to use - and it will allow me to take a look and see if I can't figure out a rating. Because fics left untagged for rating, without a rating in the header, will be marked as "unrated".

Category tags

These are simply to allow someone to find specific sorts of fic. Het, slash, gen, mixed, with mixed meaning that it could be both het and slash. Anything where there's no identification in the header of what it is will be marked "category: unknown", and while I'd appreciate people making it easier for me to tag for this, I'm not going to force the issue.

I hope they're otherwise self-explanatory, and if someone doesn't care to categorize their fic in this manner, I'm more than willing to let "category: unknown" stand when self-tagged as such.

Neither of the above new tags mean that I insist you rate or categorize your story. That's why "unrated" and "category unknown" will exist. They're to allow for those stories which are difficult to fit into the system or those authors who do not wish to use this system.

If you have a problem with the tag I put on there while tagging for rating or category, PM me, or email me at morgynleri@gmail.com, and I'll do what I can to resolve the issue.

Existing tags:

Fandom tags will remain, and if there's a fandom without a tag, let me know, and I'll see about making a tag for it. If there aren't many stories for it on the com, and the tag does not already exist, there will be a "fandom: tag needed" tag, or a "fandom: small fandom" tag.

I'm also thinking of changing the format slightly, so that all fandom tags have the format "fandom: name", although I won't implement that until I've finished adding the new tags. What do you think about making that change?

This community has been around for quite some time, and seems to have a great deal of popularity. Unfortunately, as the owner and maintainer of this community, I am going to have to step down. I simply don't have the time to manage this community as it should be managed any longer.

If anyone would like to take over management of the community, please reply to this email, or send my a message on LJ.

MOD POST: Tags Update

I am now up to October 2005 for tagging all back entries. I have made every effort to tag all posts, even those that don't follow proper posting format, so the only stories that were removed are those that didn't follow the proper format and linked out to dead links. Considering this was two years ago, I doubt anyone will really notice.

I have added many, many new tags, including, by request, the "surprise" tag. This has two functions: for those who want to hide what they are crossing something over with, and for stories that I wasn't sure what they were being crossed over with, but since I'm not really out to remove entries, I threw them into the grab bag.

Another reminder: please tag all of your entries from now on. If all the tags you need don't exist, tag as much as you can and then poke me on this post to finish the tagging for you. This post will be linked to the comm info, and can be found using the "!modpost" and "tags" tags on the lefthand side of the main comm. Same deal if you can't get your tags to work at all.

ETA: And all of the tags are updated, and many, many new things have been added to the tags. This means that tag amnesty is over: if you don't tag your posts correctly from now on, you will get a mod poking to do it. Again, respond here if the tag you need isn't in the list or you are having trouble putting on tags. Use "surprise" if you don't want to reveal what you're crossing over.

Just a quick note that this community requires you to tag your entries with everything you are crossing over, not just one thing. I'll be adjusting the rules momentarily to clarify this, and will be fixing tags and memories over the next few days, so if people will edit their entries to tag them, that'd be great. No one will be in trouble for not doing it before this post, it'd just be a great help, and please keep in mind that from now on, it is a rule.

ADMIN: Not So Lax Anymore

I've been lax in the maintenance of this comm and I'm working on fixing that now.

First, is there anyone who would be willing to help me mod/maintain the comm?

Secondly, I am going through and tagging all posts older than today's date. From this point forward, I am asking that all posts be tagged. There will be a link on the Comm Profile page listing all the tags. Also, you may tag posts after the fact by going into "Edit tags" on your post.

Thirdly, in addition to tags, it will be required that all stories (and links) state what the crossover fandoms are. Don't just assume that people know them. If such is not posted, a reply will be posted to the post requesting that information is added. If the information is not added, the post will be deleted.

I know that sounds harsh, but I'm not asking for a lot, simply that people let the subscribers and readers know what fandoms they are crossing over.

It's been a while since I've updated and added anything to the memories, and I'm not sure that I am going to at this point. Instead, I'm going back and labelling everything with tags. There's a new layout for the community and you can see all the tags (thus far) that have been added (mostly fandom tags).

Please feel free to go back and add tags to your old entries, or alternately, please tag your new entries when you post stories (fandoms will work well).

DISCUSSION: Acceptable Postings/Stories

I have a question for further discussion of all community members. When considering the requirements and description of this group, how are we defining crossovers? Should crossovers be considered only across different fandoms (for example Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Star Trek), or even similiar/shared/spin-off fandoms (Buffy and Angel, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis)

I realize that this is a fine line to walk, because while there might be argument for why Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel is not a crossover, there could be argument for why something such as Star Trek: TNG and Star Trek: Voyager or Stargate SG-1/Stargate: Atlantis can be considered crossovers.

So, I'm leaving this for community discussion. Be nice, be polite, and keep it civil.

When doing my quarterly clean-up (I'd like to do it more frequently, but my time is limited), I noticed that one post did not contain a crossover story, or a link to a crossover story, but rather it contained a link to a single fandom fic.

The entry was deleted.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that this is a community for crossover fan fiction, and not single fandom fics. Very simple, if you fic is not a crossover, then do not post it.

Everyone might want to take the time to check out the new, updated info page for the communication. It includes rules and guidelines for posting fiction to this community. From this post forward, everyone will be held accountable for adhering to those (mostly common sense) guidelines.

I am currently adding all of the posted stories to the community memories. If your story is not listed in the memories, it is for one of several reasons:

1. I wasn't sure how to list it
2. I accidentally missed it when going through the listing

If your story isn't listed in the memories and you want it to be, please comment on this post with the following information: Either the permanent link to the story/post or the date the post was made, and the fandom(s) the story should be listed under.

I was also considering listing stories by author, but I thought that might be too overboard, but I'm open to opinions on the matter. Again, simply reply to this entry.

Well RL reared its ugly head and took me away from LJ and fandom for quite some time.

I am the founder/creator/starter whatever of this group and I'm so happy to see that it took off and grew up all without me being around. So, yay!

Anyway, I love crossover fic (hence this group) and I'll be digging back through the archive to see what I've missed. (And hopefully I'll be getting that writing bug back and tackling some of my own in the future!)
