Darkness Comes Star Wars/Surprise

I posted a teaser and two prologues of this before:

http://community.livejournal.com/crossoverfic/461837.html?mode=reply

It now has a title, and chapter one.

Title: Darkness Comes
Author: Bookworm
Fandoms: Star Wars and a certain comic book
Rating: PG 13 ish so far; there WILL be violence
Warnings: Like I said, violence. I can't think of any bad language so far, but I reserve the right to use it. My romance has NOT taken on smut proportions as of yet, but if it gets steamy, I will warn appropriately. A part of this is action-adventure, but another part is a somewhat sappy romance, so consider yourself warned.
Pairings: Obi Wan/OFC
Summary: The Jedi Order takes on a legendary villain
Disclaimer: All recognizable characters belong to their respective creators. I make no money from this, it is done out of love and respect for the various characters and movies represented herein. Chapter 1

Sara moved cheerfully around the kitchen, readying her breakfast. Her stomach was strange, even more so in the morning. If she didn’t eat within a certain amount of time after waking up, she got very sick. So, breakfast was an important concern. She had slept beautifully last night. She usually did, when she called in her backup plan. It nearly always worked. She whistled softly as she put a bagel in the toaster.

Obi Wan Kenobi woke slowly. His mind still held a lingering warmth from the previous night. The scent of her hair, as always, stayed with him. He inhaled deeply, and sighed before opening his eyes. Lovely. Now, time for him to get to work.

***

Yoda brooded as he prepared for the meeting today. After the disturbing vision he had in meditation, something told him that today’s Council meeting would hold nothing good. The vision of green, and the mad laughter still filled his mind as he absently prepared himself.

***

Today was going to be a long day. She had an appointment at school this morning with an academic advisor. It would probably be mostly to the effect of “why don’t you have a major yet?” There were too many of these meetings. She would figure it out when she had time. But this would eat up most of her day. She would go to the meeting, prepared to hear an oily older man pretend to be polite and helpful, but in reality lecture her. Then, that night, she would have to go to work. It would almost be a relief, to not have to spend the time with her family. She sighed and leaned into the spray of the shower. She hated this. Her father was endlessly pushing her, expecting her to be an expert in this sort of thing. Most of the time she hardly even knew what she was doing. Sara closed her eyes and once more though of her Jedi General. She sighed as she thought of the way he would hold her close, cuddling her and gently nuzzling her neck until she felt better. Now this was the proper way to spend a morning. Sara could easily linger here for some time. But… she had things to do today. And she was using all of the hot water. She reached for the control to shut off the water, and felt a sickening lurch in her stomach. She gasped and paused for a moment, but the feeling faded as soon as it had come. Odd. Sara shrugged and shut off the water. She barely had time to step out of the shower and wrap a towel around herself, before the feeling came again, worse then ever. On a sudden instinct, Sara took two quick steps to the counter, and grabbed her glasses. Just as her hand wrapped around them, the world twisted and went black.

Obi Wan concealed a mental sigh from the Force, although doubtless Master Yoda had felt it anyway. There was little that could be concealed from him. Normally, Obi Wan tried to remain relatively dispassionate. If one did not while viewing such carnage as belongs to war, then one can easily go insane. Besides, as a Jedi, emotion as a rule was generally not a good idea. But he was frustrated. None of the meetings that morning had been going well. In fact, they were so unproductive as to still be stuck in the council room. Obi Wan wished there was an easier way to accomplish this. But, to be honest with himself, it wasn’t just the meetings that were frustrating him. In some deeper part of him, the Force kept whispering to him that something was wrong. Not the usual wrongness that stemmed from the renegade Sith Lord they all knew by now was still out there. No, this was something else. Something bigger. It wasn’t going as it should be, but he could not quite grasp just what it was. If only there was some solution… his mind drifted to his imagined lady. Doubtless she could come up with something. She didn’t seem to be Force sensitive. Or, at least not in the way he was. But there was something about her… he seemed to know instinctively that she might have the talents needed to solve this. For just a moment, he allowed himself to wish heartily that she were there.

Unfortunately, the Force heard him. All speech in the Council chamber ceased as they felt the Force twist in a way it never had before. All action seemed to stop for a moment, and then in a small spot in the center of the room, a slight vacuum formed, as the Force pulled something in from outside…

The BANG of displaced air startled them all, as did the small column of smoke. It quickly cleared, revealing a young woman. She was short in stature, just over five feet tall. She had short, dark brown hair, and was dripping wet and wearing nothing but a towel. In one hand, she held a pair of glasses. Said arm was outstretched, as if she had just been reaching for the glasses. She blinked owlishly, then narrowed her eyes, as if trying to see better. With one finger, she flicked the glasses open and shoved them up onto her face. She slowly turned in a circle, face expressionless as she surveyed the room. A shock went through Obi Wan as he recognized her as his nightly vision. Her eyes focused on him for a moment, and a repressed flash of recognition passed through her so quickly, he nearly missed it. He felt her mind shift gears in an effort to concentrate. She completed her turn, and stood there for a moment, allowing surprise to show on her face. Then she spoke, her tone such that she seemed to be speaking to herself.

“Yup. That just about figures for today.” Her slightly bitter, self-mocking tone caught in Obi Wan’s mind, and he had to suppress a frown. He would have to ask her about that later. There was silence for a moment longer. Well, just what would you say in their place?

“Why are you wearing a towel?” Mace Windu finally broke the silence. Sara rolled her eyes at the question.

“Because I just got out of the shower, Einstein. Gee, can’t fool you trained detectives, can I?” Her tone was dry, and dripping with sarcasm. Underneath the caustic wit, though, Obi Wan could sense the kind humor. She didn’t mean any offense. The sarcasm had snapped out of her automatically. Windu started to frown, then caught himself. Perhaps he caught a bit of what Obi Wan did. Either way, he must have decided to let it go.

“Who are you and why are you in our council room?” Sara shrugged.

“I was hoping you could tell me that. I was just getting out of the shower, and the next thing I knew, I was here. The will of the Force, maybe?” She shrugged again. Sara didn’t have any answers on the subject, although she wished she did. Her instincts were strangely silent on the subject. One thing they were telling her, though; something was wrong. Before she could decide how to phrase her query, though, someone spoke for her.

“Right, she is.” It was Yoda. Everyone in the room turned their gaze at him. “The will of the Force, it may be.”

“But Master Yoda,” Mace Windu spoke this time. He hid his doubt well, but Sara could tell he didn’t trust her. Good. As it should be. A stranger who just appears in the council room? Of course he shouldn’t trust her. It was only logical. But she wished she could figure out what was wrong here. “She could be a spy. How do we know that she is here for good?” Mace continued.

“No choice, we have.” Master Yoda answered. He then closed his eyes for a moment and let out a hum. “I sense that she may help us, though knows how, she does not.” Sara couldn’t help her response to this. She nodded.

“Something is wrong, but I don’t know what. I understand that you don’t trust me. You probably shouldn’t, under the circumstances. But I wish you would tell me what is wrong here. I think I could help.” The council shared glances with each other for a long, silent moment. Then, someone nodded. It was Obi Wan who spoke next.

“We have received information that Count Dooku has been killed.” Here, he hesitated. “Are you aware of who he is?” Sara nodded, frowning.

“Yes, of course, but how did he die? Who killed him?” She could remember the way Dooku was supposed to die in the movies. This, though, did not look like it was the way it happened in the movies.

“We don’t know who killed him. He was in his home in Serenno, when it blew up.” The wheels turned in Sara’s head. Something was very wrong here.

“How long has the war been going on?” Obi Wan frowned at this question.

“About two standard years.” Where was she going with this?

“That can’t be right. Dooku isn’t supposed to die for another year.”

“You know when he was supposed to die?” Mace Windu interrupted sharply. Sara nodded her head absently.

“Yes, I know how this whole thing is supposed to end. No, I won’t tell you, because I’m not allowed to change the way things are meant to be. Now please don’t interrupt.” She spoke all of this quickly, trying to get it out of the way. She stared off into space, never looking at them even as she spoke. Something, some detail nagged at her. But she couldn’t tell what it was. Then, something occurred to her, and she found herself speaking almost before she could register the thought.

“How are your organized crime bosses here on Coruscant? Have you had any unexplained deaths recently?” Mace Windu frowned at this, and he wasn’t the only one. This was growing uncanny.

“Yes. Every major head of crime here has been killed within the last standard month.” Obi Wan answered. He hesitated a moment, glancing at Master Yoda and waiting for his nod before continuing. “They had to have been related, because the killer left the same calling card on each body.” Sara closed her eyes, fearing the worst.

“What was left?” Mace Windu answered this time.

“A playing card of some kind.” He pressed a button on his chair, and a holo of the card appeared in the center of the room. Sara opened her eyes at the noise and looked.

“Oh, dear. This is very, very bad.” She said

It was a playing card of a Joker.

Far away, yet not far enough, someone observed the towering spires of the Jedi Temple. His little message had been found, it seemed. A pair of gruesomely red lips stretched into a smile. The game had begun.
