ponycake, comparing BtVS & SGA characters. You can read the evolution of the idea behind the ficlet in our comments here.
He picks up a drifter just outside of Flagstaff.
The man loping alongside the road is tall and broad, his clothes look the worse for wear, and even the way he walks is best described as "surly". He doesn't spare a glance for the cars passing him by.
But it's coming on night, so Oz pulls his van over to the shoulder, anyway, and rolls down the passenger-side window.
"Where you headed?"
The drifter has to duck his head to see into the van's interior, so his shrug is a little awkward. "Anywhere."
Oz leans over the passenger seat to pop the door handle. The door swings open, and the drifter holds Oz's eye for a moment before climbing in.
"I'm Oz."
"Dex."
---------
The guy has a serious case of dreads, but has never heard of Bob Marley. Oz rifles through the pile behind the passenger seat with one hand, and eventually finds the CD he's looking for. He loads the disc, and skips ahead through the tracks until he finds Buffalo Soldier.
They listen in silence.
When the song is over, Dex shifts uncomfortably in his seat, and shoots Oz a sideways glance.
"Got any Johnny Cash?"
Oz finds the only album of country music that he owns, and slips the disc into the console. Dex listens to the Man in Black with the same stoicism and lack of recognition that he demonstrated while listening to Tuff Gong.
Then the distinctive opening bars of Ring of Fire start to play, and Dex stiffens visibly.
When the song's over, Oz turns the stereo off.
---------
After a few hours riding in the dark, Dex breaks the silence.
"You have a cage in the back of your van."
"Yeah." Oz doesn't offer anything more, but responds, "You have a gun holstered under your jacket."
"Yeah." Dex raises his eyebrows, but the tone of his voice doesn't change. Several more minutes of silence pass, and then he speaks again.
"So. What's a buffalo?"
---------
"It's almost winter," Oz says. "I'm thinking of heading to Florida."
"What's in Florida?"
"Oranges. Beaches. Alligators." Oz pauses. "Old folks."
"Oranges." Dex's mouth quirks up at the corner. Oz takes his eyes off the road for a moment to study him.
"Wanna come?"
Dex shrugs. "Okay."
