Fandoms: Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel and X-Men(Comics, main 616 universe)

Spoilers: Through Season 5 of Angel, final episode. None for X-men, though there are Mutant Registration Act and Civil War connections implied, never explicitly stated.
Additional Warnings: NotAHappyFic ™ It's post-Apocalyptic in two senses, and that's never cheerful. There will be character deaths (multiple, in both flashbacks and as the story progresses. IMO, the story’s better if you don’t know ahead of time who has died, or how. If you really want to know so that it doesn’t shock you, you can click for deaths explicitly mentioned in this chapter.
Comments: Yes, please. This is pretty ambitious and we’d love to hear from you, to keep us going!

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jaq_of_spades for the chapter title, from a comment she made on Chapter 1.

Summary:
In a post-NFA world, Angel has lost everything: his Shanshu signed away, his friends dead... and his soul gone, worn to nothing but rags that aren’t enough to stop Angelus from rising to take control. Humans are hard to find, most far too fragile to have survived the Apocalypse. But a new breed of prey has emerged from the ashes... or perhaps they were there all along. Mutants. Angelus discovers that prey that fights back just… tastes better.

Nuclear War becomes the final solution of terrified humans, running scared from Homo Superior. Billions die to slaughter a few thousands... civilization will never rise again. But in the ashes of a terrifying new world, Rogue discovers that mutants aren't all that humans should have been fearing, and that demons think mutants are just a little more fun to hunt. Rogue would much rather be the hunter than the hunted.

Previously:

When Angelus used Rogue’s name, her real name, lying on top of her with her hands wrenched above her head and trapped, she went utterly still, her eyes wide and gone dull as river stones. "Marie's dead," she whispered, as though it mattered anymore at all, as though anything did. Nothing mattered. And somehow, with Death personified pinning her intimately to the ground, staring her in the eyes and ready to take the rest of her to join her dead heart and soul, she had no will to resist.

"Not yet she's not," he growled softly, lowering his mouth to hers. He kissed her almost gently, his lips just barely brushing hers… like he was afraid she'd break if he kissed her too hard. Angelus was savoring the moment, he had her…there'd be plenty of time for the less gentle stuff later on….

She didn't even bother to turn her head, her mouth lax and passive beneath his. The gentleness was strange, at odds with her expectation of death at Angelus' hands, particularly after the violence of their prior encounters, both fighting and before they fought, on the edge of the concrete canal. She didn't care.

He'd been expecting her to throw him across the yard, or at least put up some kind of struggle. Angelus pulled back with a frown, eyed her intently, and kissed her again. This time it was rough, violent even, his teeth scraped against hers as he forced his tongue past her lips. The vampire bore down into Rogue, his body crushing hers against the ground.

Rogue gasped, but only because he drove the air from her lungs with his weight. It was as though the kiss were happening to someone else, far away, though her fingers spasmed in reflex to the pain of her shoulder. Slowly, deep inside the wound, sliced flesh began to knit, and blood vessels to mend. He stole her air, and her lungs labored to regain it, automatic and stupidly determined.

He pulled back with a snarl of frustration. His hands still pinned hers as Angelus angled his head and met the chestnut-haired mutant's gaze, "What's wrong with you girl?! Fight me!"

A tiny, bitter smile touched one corner of her mouth. "Why?"

"Because if you don't, I'm going to kill you, Rogue," Angelus said, his knees tightening on her hips as he stretched her arms even higher above her head.

Unimaginably, her smile widened, though her eyes were still flat, dead, and expressionless. "'Bout time, sugah."
